Cobourg Council – Building Booms In Cobourg

In City Hall

Planning and development is a busy portfolio these days, Councillor Nicole Beatty said at Monday’s council meeting.

“Thirteen subdivisions, 22 site plans, five affordable-housing projects, many of which are under construction or proceeding toward construction,” Beatty listed.

Construction will soon begin on the Home Sense and Pet Smart retail projects, she said, adding that members of the public should also be aware of two upcoming special meetings to be held virtually.

On Nov. 9 at 5 p.m., the focus will be the Northumberland County Housing Corporation and their Elgin Park redevelopment.

On Nov. 30 at 5 p.m., the meeting will look at the zoning bylaw amendment for 420 Division St., in respect of the rehabilitation centre proposed for the former Woodlawn Inn.

Councillor Aaron Burchat added more numbers, with statistics from the building department for September. During that month, 18 building permits were issued (nine of which were for new dwelling units) for projects with a construction value of more than $2.2-million.

Burchat also had year-to-date figures for 2020 through Sept. 30 – 327 permits (119 of which were for new dwelling units) for projects with a construction value of more than $27.885-million – whose various associated fees and charges have brought the town more than $350,000 in revenues.
