City of Kawartha Lakes OPP – Driver Flees RIDE Check – Charged With Impaired Driving

On August 21, 2020 officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) established a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program on Golf Course Road that led to the arrest of a local driver.

An officer approached a vehicle as it entered the RIDE check area and spoke to the driver. The officer believed that the driver had been consuming alcohol and subsequently directed the driver to pull to the shoulder of the road. The driver initially compl ied but then departed the scene.

The officer followed the vehicle to a nearby residence and the ensuing investigation led to the arrest of the driver, Roger Schoonbroodt, 58 years of age, who now faces the following charges:

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to the Criminal Code

Possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay on November 19, 2020.
