Editorial – 2020 – Roll With It Baby

Editorial – In 2020, COVID-19 is the new word of the year.

But, we should also try and make the best of it.

Do what you can to keep yourself and others safe.

But make the best of the new “normal.”

Because COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon.

Editing photos of the day on August 2, 2020, a song came on that pretty much summed up the year.

Roll With It by Steve Winwood came out in 1988 and the lyrics still fit 32-years later.

“When life is too much, roll with it, baby

Don’t stop and lose your touch, oh no, baby

Hard times knocking on your door, I’ll tell them you ain’t there no more

Get on through it, roll with it, baby.”

In 2020, we all have to just “roll with it baby.”

Sure it’s a new world.

Victoria Beach is closed. People are scared, frightened, depressed, anxiety hitting the roof.

There are conspiracy theorists about.

Should we wear masks, shouldn’t we?

People are stressed.

Right now everyone and everything is mixed up.

Governments can do no right.

Things are slowly reopening.

Will it be good enough?

Will the second wave hit?

How bad will it be?

Well – “roll with it baby.”

Really, there is nothing else we can do but go forward.

Spending the day along the lakeshore that’s what people seemed to be doing.

The weather wasn’t the greatest at times. It rained during the day, cloudy, but “roll with it baby.”

It was windy. And when it is windy along the lakeshore, stand-up paddle boarders, surfers, and kite boarders flocked to Northumberland.

They come from all parts of Ontario to hit the waters of the lake from Presquille to Cobourg.

Visitors, including families were drawn to the east pier enjoyed watching the people in the water.

Cobourg is unique because of its pier. You can almost touch hands as the surfers go by they are so close (if it was allowed).

The pier we have in Cobourg gives a unique perspective of watching surfers.

But it wasn’t the only fun on the pier.

Families ventured to the end of the east pier and were clearly amazed at the pounding waves against the pier shooting skyward.

Taking photos of the waves shooting into the sky, taking family selfies and even a few people looked like they had an amazing time getting wet by the waves.

It could be said that COVID-19 most likely destroyed part of, if not the entire year.

Worse than that, it took away lives of many.

But for those that are doing their best to get through these times, “roll with it baby.”

If the beach is closed, look for that smile elsewhere.

Find that sunshine wherever you can.

If you look hard enough, I promise – you’ll find it.

Many people did just that in Cobourg on Sunday.
