Pickleball Courts Welcome Addition to Coverdale Tennis Club

In Sports

The Coverdale Tennis Courts have reopened at they are “fantastic.”

Rob Rennie and Daniel Lim were the first two on the newly painted and re-surfaced tennis courts which have also been painted with lines for pickleballers.

Rennie has been playing pickleball for approximately eight-years and he couldn’t wait to get out on the court on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.

“Top marks!,” Rennie said about the efforts by the Town of Cobourg.

Traditionally pickleball has been played at the Cobourg Community Centre, but with it being shut down due to COVID, pickleballers have had to make use of the one court at Sinclair Park Tennis Courts.

To get by, pickleballers used chalk or even crayons to create outlines on the tennis courts at Coverdale which is now the only three pickelball/tennis court in Cobourg.

‘It’s going to boost the game for adults, seniors and hopefully kids too,” said Rennie.

The sport is similar to tennis, but has a smaller court, and the ball and paddles are different from tennis.

Premium Court completed the resurfacing and replacing the nets work on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at a cost of $38,000.

Rennie said the courts are perfect for adults and seniors.

Parking is close by and the trees act as a windbreak while playing.

The demand for the sport is growing fast and they asked the town for support for the upcoming Ontario Games in 2021.

Rennie also gives credit to the Coverdale Tennis Club.

“We worked hand in hand with the tennis club to determine the proper colours so the colours wouldn’t interfere one to the other.”

“They were fantastic in their support.”
