Update – Cobourg Police Assigns Two Detectives To Work On Donegan Park Fight

Two detectives from the Cobourg Police Service have been assigned to work full-time on a altercation that took place over the weekend at Donegan Park that left one person with a serious injury.

Police responded to Donegan Park in Cobourg’s east end on Saturday, July 4, 2020 shortly before 11 p.m.

Cobourg Police Detective Sergeant John Linney spoke with Today’s Northumberland and said there are two detectives working full-time investigators on the investigation.

“What we know is a large group of late teens early 20’s from various places came to Donegan Park to deal with a dispute.”

“When police arrived Linney said “it was pretty hectic” as people left the area quickly.

Linney said at this point police don’t know what the dispute was over and who was taking part.

It is known that some people were from Cobourg and some were from outside the area.

“There (were) lots of people involved. Lots of interviews to be had, lots of investigation and lots of follow-up.”

As first reported by Today’s Northumberland a machete may have been used during the fight that caused a serious injury to one person’s hand along with others receiving injuries.

“It does appear that it was more than just a fist fight. We can’t say exactly what the weapons/weapon was used, but that’s what we’re trying to find out through interviews what it might have been.”

With social media there may be information in the community surrounding the incident.

“Some people don’t feel comfortable coming to the police. If that’s the case and someone knows something about it, feel free to use Crime Stoppers which is completely anonymous.”

During any investigation when people know something and don’t come forward it is frustrating for police.

“A lot of investigations hinge on eyewitness or even what is bantered around in the community because there is some element of truth to every story.”

“If you have some information about an investigation it certainly helps investigators down a path that may lead to get to a point where we lay charges and solve things.”

With police arriving quickly to the incident on Saturday evening it may have prevented further serious injuries to other people involved.
