Cobourg Police were out training recently with bicycles for the summer.
Sgt. Paul Legere was instructing over 20 Special Constables and Auxiliary members in the eight-hour course at the police station and also in practical training on the road.
Legere said the service greatly appreciates the donation of two new e-bikes by Enbridge.
The officers practised in different environments including along the waterfront and along trails.
“We are also trying to get into areas not normally accessible with cruisers.”
“Bicycles are important for a number of reasons including cost,” said Legere.
“We can’t obviously give all officers a cruiser. But it also helps with the environment by having bicycle power versus gas.”
“There are also a number of areas easier to access with a bicycle where a cruiser isn’t practical or possible.”
Legere said the new e-bikes are “fantastic.”
“The extra wide tires can be utilized on grass and non asphalt environment and can still operate in regular bicycle mode if the battery runs low.”
