Northumberland OPP – Driver Charged With Impaired By Drug

(CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) check point on the 497 eastbound exit of Highway 401 at Big Apple Drive on Saturday June 13, 2020.

At approximately 11:40 am a grey Toyota SUV approached the officers check point. Upon speaking with the driver, it became apparent the individual was displaying signs of impairment. The officer conducted a standardized field sobriety test (SFST) at the scene to which the driver performed poorly. The driver was arrested for impaired operation then transported to the Northumberland OPP detachment in Brighton to perform the drug recognition evaluation.

Further investigation found the driver to be in possession of bear spray that was believed to be there for a dangerous purpose.

As a result of the investigation James SINCLAIR (age 55) of Whitby, Ontario was charged with:

· Operation while Impaired alcohol and drugs
· Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
· Failure to comply with release order (4 counts)

The accused was held in custody for a show cause hearing on June 14, 2020.
