Northumberland OPP – Traffic Stop Results in Criminal Charges

(CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged two individuals as a result of a traffic stop that was conducted on June 1, 2020.

At approximately 1:45 pm an officer stopped a black Mazda four door sedan travelling westbound on Highway 401 for a Highway Traffic Act violation. The driver and front seat passenger of the vehicle were observed by the officer switching seats before coming to a complete stop east of the highway exit at Percy Street. The officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle and advised the occupant that t hey were under arrest for obstructing a police officer. The accused became belligerent while resisting arrest and attempted to flee toward the highway into oncoming high speed traffic. The officer was able to effectively use a conducted energy weapon to gain control of the accused, who was then safely taken into custody.

As a result of the investigation Jason COLLINS (age 38) of Marmora and Lake, Ontario was arrested and charged with:
· Operation while prohibited
· Obstruct peace officer
· Escape lawful custody
· Driving while under suspension
· Speeding

Jason LAVECQUE (age 28) of Marmora and Lake, Ontario was arrested and charged with:
· Fail to comply with probation order
· Obstruct peace officer

Both of the accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on August 19, 2020.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for 45 days.

A third individual who was the rear seat passenger of the vehicle was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for an unrelated matter.
