Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is pleased to announce Cornerstone Connect, a new text and online-chat tool that allows victims and survivors of family violence and abuse to get help and support – available as of June 8.
Executive director Nancy Johnston said the service was created for those who may find it impossible to reach out to a crisis line at a time when they are trapped at home with an abuser due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and physical-distancing measures.
“Additionally, Cornerstone Connect will act as an extension of our support line beyond the pandemic,” Johnston added.
“We want to make sure women have access to the services they need.”
Cornerstone Connect is a confidential and secure service for women who may be living through violence and abuse at home, especially with the increased risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Cornerstone’s counsellors provide emotional support, practical advice and referrals and can help individuals talk about how they’re feeling; create a safety plan to reduce risk of harm; get the services needed for support; and cope with current situations during this period of physical distancing,” the announcement stated.
Cornerstone Connect will be open for text and online chats seven days a week from noon to 8 p.m., with trained counsellors available to provide advice, referrals and support. It employs safe, encrypted technology to ensure confidentiality, and Cornerstone is asking everyone to spread the word about this valuable new resource.
“Some of our friends and neighbours are living with abuse in their homes and the community – Cornerstone Connect provides a secure, supportive way to reach out for help and advice,” Johnston said.
“Now, more than ever, we need to look out for one another.”
