Dryer Fire Causes an Estimated $100,000 Damage to Cobourg Home

In Local

A dryer fire caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a home in Cobourg on Sunday, May 31, 2020.

Cobourg firefighters responded to the call on Leonard Drive in the west end of Cobourg at approximately 4:17 p.m.

Captain Gene Stroeder said firefighters were told the fire was in the clothes dryer which was in the basement of the two-storey home.

When fire crews arrived one person was still inside looking for pets. All the other occupants were outside of the home.

Fire crews quickly entered the building wearing breathing apparatus and found flames and heavy smoke in the area of the dryer.

Stroeder said the fire was contained to the one room.

“It was difficult with limited means of ventilation and with only one window in the basement.”

“Once you have the build-up of heat (smoke) it makes it extremely hard to see.”

Stroeder said the occupants were alerted by the smoke detector in the basement and when they went downstairs they could see a layer of smoke and immediately called 9-1-1.

Damage is estimated at approximately $100,000.
