Municipality of Port Hope Update on Penryn Mason Homes Development Process

In response to the growing interest surrounding the proposed Penryn Mason Homes Phase 5 residential subdivision development, Municipality of Port Hope Council and Staff would like to remind residents of the formal planning process that is being conducted, as required by law under the Ontario Planning Act.

“Council and Staff are aware of the community concerns about the proposed development, particularly as it relates to any removal of trees necessary to develop the lands,” notes Bob Sanderson, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope. “As is always the case in a development of this nature, a formal, detailed, prescribed planning process is being carried out by our Staff. This process includes ample opportunities for public feedback, all of which will be reviewed and considered by Council.”

The planning processes for subdivision developments, Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendments are mandated by the Planning Act, and includes a detailed, step-by-step project approval process, from the time that an application is submitted to the Municipality by the property owner/developer to the final Council decision for the project. Throughout the process, opportunities for public feedback are encouraged through online and hard copy comment forms, and a statutory public meeting. At the public meeting, Council and Staff are in attendance to provide residents the opportunity to ask questions, provide comments and share their concerns to Council, the developer and staff.

By design, this process benefits Council and Staff, as it generates further awareness of public concerns and issues related to the development. The process serves as an information gathering mechanism and a system of checks and balances.

A community consultation page has been created on the Municipal website at porthope.ca/community-consultation. This page includes all relevant planning documents, information about upcoming public meeting dates, project status updates and feedback forms. Community members are encouraged to visit this page regularly for the most up-to-date information and to provide their feedback on the project.
