In City Hall

Mayor John Henderson reported on the local reaction to the closure of the Weston bakery in Cobourg at Monday’s council meeting.

Henderson mentioned a round-table gathering whose multiple participants included representatives of both the company and its union as well as the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, Watton Employment, Service Canada, educational institutions involved in skills training, and Northam Industrial Park.

“We are working on a transition,” he said.

“I can confirm the intent is to bring closure to Weston’s after 25-plus years, and what we are all looking for, of course, is that transition for the 170 employees.

“We will be meeting on a quarterly basis and, with those discussions are being shared both with our MP and MPP,” the mayor pledged.

“We have a lot of work in front of us.”
