Cornwall resident Ian Callan completed the first leg of his 158 kilometre, Highway of Heroes HonouRun on October 26, 2019 near Cornwall.
The run started in Lancaster which is east of Cornwall at 8 a.m. and ended 58 kilometres later in Ingleside.
Callan was joined by Sebastian Warner on Saturday for the ten hour run which was held on the day after the National Poppy Campaign began.
On Friday, November 1, starting at 9 p.m. they will complete the Highway of Heroes HonouRun starting from Trenton and running over night to Kingston which is a distance of 100 kilometres.
The Highway of Heroes HonouRun is dedicated to the 158 Canadian Forces members who died in Afghanistan.
The two will be joined on Friday by Dave Kervin from the Canadian Armed Forces Hastings Prince Edward Regiment.
The Highway of Heroes HonouRun will finish at the Leon’s Center in Kingston for the inaugural Highway of Heroes Hockey Game honouring All That Gave Some & Some That Gave All.
The hockey game will consist of Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni roster who will face off against the Highway of Heroes Hockey Team, which is made up of local military, veterans, and first responders.
Maple Leaf alumni members include, Wendel Clark, Mark Laforest, Rick Vaive, Alyn McCauley, Bob McGill, Mike Zigomanis, Luca Caputi, Jay McClement, Al Iafrate, Mike Kostka, Mike Krushelnyski, Nikolai Borschevsky and coach Jim Dorey.
Born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario, Callan teaches Physical Education at Longue Sault Public School.
While dedicating the run to Canada’s fallen heroes, surviving veterans, military personnel and first responders, Callan wishes to also bring attention to mental health issues that go along with the job of protecting freedom and keeping us safe.
Callan is a 4-time Boston Marathon Marathoner and has completed several ultra-marathons, recently finishing a 100 mile race in the Gatineau Hills of Quebec. Always inspired by the spirit of Terry Fox, Callan has sought the medium of running to motivate his students to challenge themselves while looking for ways to make a positive impact in the world-at-large.
Callan created an initiative for runners and slow cyclists to take part in a Highway of Heroes HonouRun to pay their respect to Military, Veterans and First Responders and bring awareness of the importance of providing Mental Health to our service men and women.
In support of To The Stan and Back (http://www.tothestanandback.com/) Callan ran 58 kilometres with the Cornwall Multisport Club including a Veteran and a First Responder. On November 1 2019 at 9 p.m., the HonouRun will start at the 401 and Glen Miller Road in Trenton (the first bridge on the Highway of Heroes)
