Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection Held In Port Hope Hoping To Make Roadways Safer

In Police Blotter

The first five commercial motor vehicles inspected just north of Port Hope on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 were deemed out of service due to various issues.

A Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection was held at the MTO Yard on County Road 28 just north of Highway 401 at Port Hope with Northumberland OPP, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Transportation taking part.

Last year the OPP responded to 7,674 transport related collisions with 65 people killed.

Nearly 75% of the people who lost their lives were people in other vehicles and not the commercial motor vehicle drivers.

“Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections are a great thing,” said Northumberland OPP Inspector Brian O’Halloran.

“It goes to show when we work together as a team with these different agencies, we can make our highways safer.”

“Most of the problems officers are seeing today could have been rectified.  It’s the drivers not taking the time to look over their vehicles.”

Some of the issues on Wednesday were flat tires not being identified, loose cargo including a paving machine that rolled forward when the truck hauling it stopped, gouge marks in the tires and driver’s having the wrong license.

Although some of the driver’s may have been inconvenienced, O’Halloran says it’s for the safety of everyone on the road.

“If we can get commercial motor vehicle drivers to make sure their vehicle is safe before heading onto the highway it’s helps keep everyone safe.”

A total of 17 inspections were done with 10 commercial motor vehicles placed out of service. There were 13 charges and one license plate was seized.
