From August 5, 2019 to August 11, 2019, the Cobourg Police Service responded to 249 calls for service including: 9 motor vehicle collisions, 5 alarm calls, 20 theft/shoplifting calls, 30 suspicious persons/vehicles calls, 9 domestic/family disputes, 3 mischief/property damage calls, 3 assault calls, and 5 disturb the peace calls. Here are some examples of calls for service for the week.
August 5
Cobourg police arrested and executed an outstanding warrant for 34-year-old James Rankin of no fixed address. Rankin was held in custody for a bail hearing and was charged with multiple offences under the Criminal Code.
At approximately 5:10 pm, police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver in the downtown area. Police responded and located the involved vehicle. Police investigated and determined that the driver was neither impaired by drugs or alcohol. No charges resulted from the incident.
August 6
Police received a complaint of fraudulent transactions from resident’s bank account. The victim had received a text message indicating their bank card had been frozen and was further provided with directions to complete forms in order to correct the problems. Soon after completing the forms, multiple fraudulent transactions occurred within the victims account by unknown person. Police are investigating in an attempt to identify the person(s) responsible. The public are encouraged to contact their financial institutions by phone to confirm the legitimacy of any questionable texts or e-mails that are received.
Police conducted a traffic stop on Division Street and received information that the driver was wanted on an outstanding warrant. The woman was identified as 45-year-old Shannon Quigley of Cobourg. She was arrested and charged both under the Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code.
August 7
At approximately 2:45 pm, while conducting patrol in the east end, police observed a male known to be wanted on an outstanding warrant. Police confirmed the identity of 27 year old Cole LeBarge of Cobourg and placed him under arrest. LeBarge was charged under the Criminal Code with 2 counts of failing to comply with probation as well as Possession of a schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
At approx. 10:40 pm, an on-going police investigation regarding multiple counts of mischief concluded with a Cobourg man being arrested and charged under the Criminal code with 8 counts of mischief. While investigating the multiple complaints of garbage being thrown onto the victim’s driveway, 58- year-old Blair McColl of Cobourg was caught in the act by police. He was arrested and released on a promise to appear with a court date in September.
August 8
Police responded to a business address in the east end after receiving report that an unlocked vehicle was entered by unknown persons and that a purse had been stolen from the vehicle. The victim soon after learned that a fraudulent transaction had occurred in their bank account. Police are currently investigating to establish the identity of the person(s) responsible. Police are reminding the public to ensure their vehicles are locked at all times when not in use.
At approximately 9:30 pm, while conducting general patrol just north of the down town core, police observed a male known to have an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to attend court. The male was identified by police as 33 year old Cory Keers of Cobourg. He was arrested on the strength of the warrant and later released with a court date in September.
August 9
At approximately 3:00 pm, police were dispatched to the Cobourg marina area after receiving multiple calls of a fight in progress. Information received indicted that numerous persons were involve in the fight and had begun to leave the area prior to police arrival. Police attended and searched the area for the involved persons with negative results. None of the persons involved contacted police to make any allegations or complaints.
Police were dispatched to a downtown business after receiving a complaint of sexual assault and food theft. The victim advised that the suspect had grabbed her for a sexual purpose and then left the establishment without paying his tab. Police arrived on scene and located the male suspect. He was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code. He was released on conditions with a court date in September.
Police received a report of a stolen vehicle from a residential address in the south end. Police investigated the scene and it appeared that the vehicle had been removed from the property by tow truck. Police later located the vehicle at a local towing company and learned that the property management had the vehicle removed. The vehicle was determined to not have been stolen and the owner was notified.
August 10
At approximately 4:10 am, police were dispatched to a domestic dispute in the east end. Police investigated and determined a male had suffered minor injuries during a physical altercation. The suspect female was located and arrested. She was charged with assault and mischief under the Criminal Code. She was later released on a promise to appear with an officer in charge undertaking.
Police were dispatched to a local vehicle dealership after receiving a report that two vehicles had been lifted onto blocks and had the tires stolen. The theft occurred sometime overnight and police are currently investigating in attempts to identify suspects.
At approximately 11:40 pm police conducted a traffic stop on Division street which resulted in the driver being charged with numerous offences under the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor License Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and multiple counts under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act for possession of a substance in schedules 1 and 3 for the purpose of trafficking. A quantity of narcotics was seized by police and the driver of the vehicle, 28-year-old Tyler Stephens of Oshawa was arrested and held for a bail hearing.
August 11
Police were dispatched to the downtown area after receiving information from a witness regarding a possible domestic dispute between a male and female. Police attended the area and located a female matching the description provided by the witness. The female declined to make any statement to Police and did not wish any further Police action or involvement. No charges were laid.
Police attended a commercial business after receiving an alarm indicating a glass break on the premises. Police attended and conducted a search of the property. The business was determined to be secure with no signs of any persons present or any damage to the property.
