Smokers’ Helpline Providing Free Nicotine Patches and Gum to People Trying to Quit Tobacco

In Community

Area residents trying to quit smoking can go online and order something that won’t cost them a cent, but which makes plenty of sense for their long-term health.

Free nicotine patches and gum – and $10 in discount coupons to purchase more products – are now available to anyone in Ontario trying to quit smoking or tobacco use. The Smokers’ Helpline is providing the free trial packages until the end of November. To order a package, people can go online http://www.smokershelpline.ca/trialoffer or call 1-877-513-5333.

“The nicotine patches and gum are free and can pay off handsomely in helping people break free from tobacco use,” says Karen Taylor, a Public Health Nurse with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “Research shows that nicotine patches and gum can help people quit for good, so we encourage people to contact the Smokers’ Helpline to order their packages.”

Staying smoke-free can take several quit attempts, so even if people haven’t been successful in the past, Taylor encourages them to try again by tapping into the free resources offered by the Smokers’ Helpline.

In addition to offering the nicotine patches and gum, the Smokers’ Helpline provides support and a wealth of information about quitting smoking and tobacco use. Smokers’ Helpline is a free, confidential service provided by the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Health Unit can also support people trying to quit smoking or tobacco use in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Local residents can learn about supports and services by calling 1-866-888-4577, ext. 2240.
