Weekly Report June 17 – June 23, 2019
A quantity of liquor was taken from the LCBO located at 111 Elgin Street in Cobourg by a man at approximately 2:30 pm on June 24, 2019. The suspect took the liquor and exited the store, making no attempt to pay for it. After police received a description of the suspect and were advised that he had gotten on the town bus, police stopped the bus.
Cobourg resident, Adam Kataila 23 years-old, was charged with Theft Under $5,000 and Possession Obtained by Crime contrary to sections 334(b) and 355(b) of the Criminal Code.
From June 17, 2019 to June 23, 2019 the Cobourg Police Service responded to 246 occurrences including; 26 community service calls, 23 police assistance calls, 10 traffic complaints, 5 fraud calls, 11 suspicious person calls, 4 police information calls, 12 property related calls, 9 assault calls, 2 break and enter calls, 6 – 911 calls, 4 Liquor License Act calls, 8 theft calls, 11 motor vehicle collisions, 10 alarm calls, 5 harassment calls, 4 disturb the peace calls, 5 threats calls, 2 domestic dispute calls, 5 family disputes. Some examples of calls for service this week include;
June 17
At approximately 10:40 am, a man currently sought by the Cobourg Police Service on the strength of an outstanding arrest warrant was located at the Ontario Court of Justice located at 860 William Street in the Town Cobourg. As a result of a subsequent investigation, 38 year-old Michael McGill of Cobourg was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to Comply with Probation under the Criminal Code. McGill was held in custody scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice for a bail hearing in June 2019.
At approximately 4:15 pm, a man currently sought by the Cobourg Police Service on the strength of an outstanding arrest warrant attended the Cobourg Police Station to turn himself into police. As a result of a subsequent investigation, 27 year-old Wallace Munro of Cobourg was arrested and charged with three counts of failing to Comply with Probation under the Criminal Code. Munro was released from custody scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in July of 2019.
At approximately 7:15 pm officers were dispatched to at residence in the downtown core after receiving a report of a man inside the home unresponsive. Officers found the man in an unknown form of medical distress and when paramedics arrived on scene, they transported him to Northumberland Hills Hospital for further medical treatment.
June 18
At approximately 1:00 am officers attended an east end neighbourhood after receiving a report of possible human remains located in the area. Officers attended and discovered what appeared to be skeletal remains in a plastic bag. Police conducted an investigation that determined the bag contained remains of a domestic canine. No evidence to suggest foul play and no further police investigation was required.
At approximately 1:00 pm officers were dispatched to attend a business located in the west end of Cobourg, regarding an alleged theft in progress. As a result of a subsequent police investigation 61 year-old Mississauga resident Stefan Dolinski was arrested and charged with: Theft Under $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 under the Criminal Code. Dolinski was held in Police custody, schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice for a Bail hearing in June 2019. Co -Accused 62 year-old Mississauga resident Jan Jablonski was arrested and charged with Theft Under $5,000 under the Criminal Code. Jablonski was released from custody, scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in July of 2019.
Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision in the area of Heath Street at approximately 1:50 pm. No reported injuries. One driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to yield from private driveway.
June 19
At approximately 12:14 pm officers were dispatched to a west end neighbhourhood, after receiving a report of a man aggressively pan handling. The man was reportedly approaching bystanders in the area, stating he had been locked out of his residence and needed funds to pick up his children. The suspect was described to be approximately six feet tall, skinny, wearing a black Nike hat and a long-sleeved white shirt. Officers conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate the man.
Officers conducted a Traffic Enforcement Initiative targeting vehicles travelling at a high rate of speed in the area. No infractions observed.
Shortly before 3:00 pm on June 19, 2019 officers attended St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School and placed the school in a lockdown. The lockdown lasted for approximately 20 minutes, during which time members of the Cobourg Police Service searched the building. The premise was searched without incident. No danger to the public from this incident. Investigation continues.
June 20
At approximately 8:15 am officers conducted a foot patrol at St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School. Everything appeared to be in order.
Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision in the parking lot of a local business located in the east end of Cobourg at approximately 1:45 pm. No reported injuries. No charges laid as a result of the collision having occurred on private property.
At approximately 3:30 pm police responded to a report of an after the fact theft. Police investigation determined that the complainant had left his jacket, which contained his wallet, unattended on the rear of a motorcycle parked in the Cobourg Marina parking lot. When the complainant returned to the area he was unable to locate his jacket. A search of the area was completed, negative results for any person(s) in the area. No suspects. No witnesses to the incident. Police remind people to always keep valuables on you and not left in your vehicle.
June 21
Police investigated a report of an intrusion alarm at a business located in the west end of town at approximately 7:55 am. Police conducted a search of the premise. All in order.
Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision in the parking lot of a local business located in the west end of Cobourg at approximately 2:15pm. No reported injuries. No charges laid as the collision occurred on private property.
Officers responded to a residential address in a west end neighbourhood after receiving a report of a dispute in progress. Officers attended and learned that the involved parties were neighbours who were arguing over the painting of a fence which adjoins their properties. Allegations were made to investigating officers that during the verbal altercation one neighbour had threated to strike the other with a fly swatter. Advice was given to both parties.
June 22
Officers were dispatched to a residential address in the downtown core at approximately 4:20 am, regarding a suspected intoxicated man observed in the area. The man was reportedly attempting to climb over a privacy fence to gain entry to a backyard of the home. Police attended and located him, who was subsequently arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. Due to concern for his personal well-being the man was held in the custody of the Cobourg Police Service until sober. The male was issued a Provincial Offences Notice under the Liquor Licence Act for being intoxicated in a public place.
At approximately 6:25 pm police responded to the Cobourg beach after receiving a report of two missing ten year-old children. Information received indicated that the children had last been observed walking westbound on the beach. The children were subsequently located, and returned to the care of their parents. All in order.
Police investigated a report of break and enter in progress at a residential address in a west end neighbourhood. Information received indicated that the front door of the residence was observed to be ajar and it was suspected someone was inside the premise. Officers attended and subsequently learned that the door was secured with a screen which had been left open by the home owner due the warm temperatures. All in order.
June 23
At approximately 4:20 am police responded to east end address after receiving a report of a suspicious person in the area. The suspect had reportedly been observed shinning a flash light into a residential basement window. No further description provided. Police conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate any person(s) in the area. All appeared in order.
Police responded to an address in the downtown area after receiving a report of an after the fact mischief. Police investigation revealed that sometime overnight unknown person(s) damaged a parking sign in the area. No witnesses to the incident. No suspects.
Police attended a local business in the down town at approximately 8:45 pm in response to an intrusion alarm. Officers conducted a search of the exterior premise and determined everything was in order.
