Letter To The Editor – Piccini Waiting For Feds Support For Broadband Expansion

In Letter to Editor

Residents of Northumberland-Peterborough South know well that expansion for broadband is a critical gateway for the digital economy. In a digital world, being disconnected means being disadvantaged.

And we know all too well about cellular dead zones.

Our government committed to improve cellular coverage in the election. I was proud to announce in mid-May we are following through with that commitment in Roseneath and beyond. We are committing $71 million to the Eastern Ontario Regional Network’s project to virtually eliminate cellular gaps in the region. The project is expected to generate up to 3,000 jobs over 10 years and potential revenues of $420 million.

However, in order to go ahead, this worthwhile project requires the support of the federal government. We are waiting on them. Earlier in May, the federal infrastructure minister posted a news release claiming Ontario’s priorities were his priorities. Now, we need action on this important infrastructure project.

Existing and planned networks in our region are not robust enough to meet increased demand. Eastern Ontario needs both coverage and capacity to thrive.

Our government is committed to protecting what matters most for the people of Ontario and residents of Northumberland-Peterborough South. We will continue to work with all levels of government to deliver reliable broadband service that also improves public safety.

David Piccini is the MPP for Northumberland – Peterborough South, Member of the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.
