CHRIS GARRETT MEMORIAL PARK
Birchwood Trail, Cobourg, ON

MAY 15TH, 2019
11:30 A.M. – 1:30 P.M.

The Cobourg Police Service and extended family cordially invite anyone wishing to stop by for a few moments to the 15th Annual Celebration of Constable Chris Garrett #221 who lost his life on May 15th, 2004 while protecting the citizens of the Town of Cobourg.

On May 15th, 2004 at approximately 03:00 hours Constable Garrett responded to a call involving the alleged robbery. Constable Garrett met the alleged victim in the parking lot of the old Cobourg hospital on Chapel Street and proceeded to take details of the alleged incident. At some point during the taking of information, Constable Garrett was attacked with a knife and was mortally wounded. Constable Garrett, although fatally wounded, was able to remove his pistol and pursue the suspect, firing all of his pistol rounds, eventually wounding the assailant with what is believed to be the last round. At this point Constable Garrett collapsed to the ground and died. It is known that the actions of Constable Garrett saved the lives of his platoon members seeing that his murderer was driven to kill as many police officers as possible. The wounding of Constable Garrett’s murderer prohibited him from carrying out any further carnage and undoubtedly saved the life or lives of both citizens and other officers as searches uncovered weapons and functioning explosive devices intended to be used against Cobourg Police Service.

Refreshments will be provided.

All are encouraged to attend the Chris Garrett Park to join in the celebration of Chris’ life and sacrifice.
