City of Kawartha Lakes OPP – Distracted Driving

In Police Blotter

Officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) participated in the Distracted Driving Campaign from March 11 – 17, 2019.
During this time 13 drivers, on City of Kawartha Lakes roads, were charged with Drive with Hand-Help Communications Device contrary to section 78.1(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). They were issued Provincial Offences Notices that included a $500 fine, plus victim fine surcharge and costs, for a total payable of $615. An additional 2 drivers were charged with Careless Driving contrary to section 130 HTA, with a total payable of $490.
Penalties for distracted driving were increased on January 1, 2019. A first conviction can include a fine of $1000, three demerit points and a three-day licence suspension. Penalties increase with subsequent convictions.
Though the distracted driving campaign is over, distracted driving remains a concern on our roadways and officers will continue to enforce this law in an effort to increase road safety.
