Habitat for Humanity Northumberland and 100+ Women Northumberland Launch Women Build Week 2019!

In Community

On Tuesday January 22nd Habitat for Humanity Northumberland joined with 100+ Women Northumberland to launch the 2019 “Women Build Week”! From Tuesday January 22nd to Saturday January 26th the Habitat build site located at 22/24 University Avenue in Cobourg will be hosting over 30 women volunteers for the 2019 “Women Build Week”.
At the March 2018 meeting of 100+ Women Northumberland Habitat Northumberland was selected as the charity to receive a grant of $6,050. Habitat Northumberland was nominated by member Leslie Logan and selected for the build project at 22/24 University which will help four families in Cobourg achieve the dream of homeownership. 100+ Women Northumberland was established in April 2016 and is a member of the international 100 Who Care Alliance. The goal is to bring together women to leverage small, individual donations into larger, collective grants to invest in Northumberland-based charities.
Since then Habitat Northumberland has been working with 100+ Women Northumberland to host a “Women Build Week” as part of the volunteer component of building the four Habitat homes. “Women Build Week” encourages women to empower themselves by helping to build Habitat homes, possibly learn new skills in a supportive environment, and promote the role that women play in building a healthy and vibrant community. “Women Build Week” is not about excluding men; it is about including women.
“We are honoured to be partnering with 100+ Women Northumberland on this project,” says Meaghan Macdonald, Executive Director for Habitat Northumberland. “The goal of the Women Build movement is to bring women together to promote the impact that women can have in building affordable housing. This message aligns very well with the goal of 100+ Women Northumberland. “Women Build Week” 2019 demonstrates the incredible impact that the women in our community have in building a safe and healthy community for everyone.”
Throughout the 2019 “Women Build Week” members of 100+ Women Northumberland will be working alongside women in the community, Habitat Northumberland staff, and the future homeowners of the first two units of 22/24 University Avenue West in Cobourg to renovate the existing two units. In the spring of 2019 Habitat Northumberland will be building two additional units at the back of the property. This property will eventually house four families who, through this project, will be able to achieve strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.
