Favourable Recommendation To Former Port Hope Police Officer Posted On Twitter

In Editor Choice, Local

A online social media post gives a favourable recommendation to a Port Hope Police officer who resigned earlier this year.
The Twitter post by Kelly Donovan from Fit4Duty – The Ethical Standard is a letter of reference for Joe-Ann Kortman dated December 31, 2018.
The letter is signed and dated by Port Hope Police Chief Bryant Wood.
It reads as follows:
“Please accept this letter as confirmation that Joe-Ann Kortman was employed by the Port Hope Police Service from April 26, 2010 to December 31, 2018. She held the position of First Class Constable at the time of her resignation. During her tenure she received favourable annual evaluations.”
The Fit4Duty post adds, “#Villain one day, #Saint the next. #Policing is ruing the careers of good people, and allowing other “yes” men and women to flourish. 2 years later, and the chief writes a recommendation letter?”
Donovan stated to Today’s Northumberland, “I read about JoeAnn’s story from two years ago and was blown away by what the article said.”
Port Hope Police Chief Bryant Wood stated on Monday, December 17, 2018, the Police Service and Kortman have “resolved all issues in respect to her employment with PHPS to our mutual satisfaction.”
“As a result of this she is no longer an employee of the Port Hope Police Service and the disciplinary hearing will not be proceeding.”
Today’s Northumberland contacted Chief Wood on January 14, 2019 for comment about the Twitter post.
Wood stated, “There will be no comment as all employment related matters between the PHPS and Ms. JoeAnn Kortman have been finalized.”
Kortman had been suspended with pay from the Port Hope Police Service from November 2016 to December 31, 2018 after facing 20 charges under the Police Services Act.
