Theft of hockey equipment from vehicle.

A Huffman Avenue resident reported his truck rummaged through and hockey equipment taken. On December 22 the man reported the incident believed to have occurred over night.  The hockey equipment was in a black bag consisting of a CCM Hockey Helmet, Bauer Hockey Gloves and Skates. A composite hockey stick along with the man’s wallet and a Makita 18 Volt impact drill were also taken.  It is believed the vehicle may have been left unlocked. Anyone with information is asked to contact Port Hope Police at PHPS@PHPS.on.ca or Crime Stoppers.

Computer Fraud.

A Port Hope woman reported to Port Hope Police her computer was taken over and she was scammed out of $400.00. On December 9th the woman’s son was on the family computer when a pop up window indicated her computer was compromised. She was directed to call a 1-888 number which she did. She then spoke with someone posing as a tech who remoted into her computer and installed an app.  She then provided her visa number to pay for the app which was supposed to give her computer added protection.  The computer never worked right and she took it to a reputable computer technician for repair. The woman’s card was locked out by her bank to prevent further transactions. Port Hope Police are warning residents never to open attachments or links from pop-up windows.  Police suggest if these windows pop up to shut down the computer and disconnect from the Wi-Fi.

Thieves hit a number of businesses on Peter Street.

Port Hope Police are investigation a series of break and enters that occurred in the early morning hours of the 24th of December. At 4:00am Police were called to the Tim Horton’s restaurant on Peter Street after a staff member noticed the front door glass had been cut out. Once inside culprit(s) took cash that was in the tills and also accessed a safe and removed currency.  Police believe the same thieves are responsible for break and enter at Pet Value, Pappas Pizza and Subway all in the Peter Street Plaza. In each case either the glass was smashed and or cut. No alarms were activated and Police remain on scene continuing the investigation checking and surveillance images.
