Port Hope House Sustains Heavy Fire Damage

In Local, Police Blotter

A family has been displaced after a fire heavily damaged their home on Smith Street, just south of Dorset Street in Port Hope on Friday, November 9, 2018.
Shortly after 11 a.m., the owner of the home, Adam Carr arrived home for his lunch break.
“I opened up the front door and there was a wall of smoke.”
“I couldn’t see anything past the coat rack which is about a foot away,” said Carr.
As firefighters was working to extinguish the blaze, Carr said that he remembers before opening the front door he could smell something burning, but just thought a neighbour had their fireplace going.
“I didn’t think anything of it, but when I opened the front door, I knew where it was then.”
Two dogs (husky and mix) located in a bedroom of the home did not survive the fire.
Carr and his wife Camilla could only stand by and watch and heavy smoke filled the air from the home.
The couple have two children ages five (boy) and eight (girl).
Car said they have insurance on the home.
Fire officials believe the fire started in the basement and burned for some length of time, eventually burning through the main floor of the home.
Damage is estimated in excess of $150,000 and there is no cause as yet.
