Giving The Gift Of Life For The 250th Time In Cobourg

In Community, Letter to Editor

It was a special occasion on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the Columbus Community Centre in Cobourg.
Carter Brown donated blood for the 250th and it only took him just over five minutes.
While hooked up and relaxing, Brown said, “there are people out there that are just waiting for this to come to them.”
“We all need angels around and I feel like I’m an angel and we need more of us.”
For those who don’t realize the accomplishment of donating that many times, Brown started when he was 18-years-old and he will be 76-years-old this year.
“It doesn’t matter how many you’ve got (donations), just keep coming,” he proudly tells others.
Andra Stancu who is the Territory Manager of Canadian Blood Services said Brown has, “incredible dedication throughout a lifetime.”
“It helps three patients each time and Carter is an inspiration.”
“We don’t have a lot of donors that are committed as Carter. Male donors can donate up to six times a year with a interval of 56 between donations and women have a bit longer interval with 84 days between.”
Reaching their goal of blood at each clinic is something members of the Canadian Blood Services constantly try to achieve.
“The demand is ongoing especially during the summer,” said Stancu.
“It’s such a difficult period for us. A lot of people go on vacation and it’s so hard to fill in the gaps.”
Persons can start donating at 17-years-old and companies like Vandermeer Toyota has been “amazing with internal recruitment and we look to invite other local businesses.”
Stancu says it can take up to 50 donors to supply one person who has been in a car accident.
“In this community Carter is truly one of a kind.”
