Alnwick/Haldimand Township firefighters were called to a fully engulfed barn fire on Thomas Road east of Grafton (east of Grafton), south of County Road 2 at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018.
A neighbour spotted the flames coming from the barn, but there was nothing that could be done to save it as it was to well involved even when first noticed. Radiant heat melted the vinyl siding of the home.
When the radiant heat was melting the house, the neighbour and a firefighter broke the door down to rescue the family dog.
The elderly couple that live in the home weren’t home when the fire was noticed. Cramahe Township Fire Department were also called because of the dry conditions a nearby field caught fire.
A neighbour used a tractor to try and extinguish the fire in the field.
Hamilton Township Fire Department was also called for assistance.
Smoke could be seen for at least 20 kilometres.
It’s unknown the exact cause, but a number of farming equipment including a tractor and pickup truck were destroyed in the fire along with other items.
Not sure of exact amount of damage.
