The Cobourg Farmer’s Market opened for another season on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
A bagpiper lead the procession of dignitaries including Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland, his six-year-old son Rome, MP Philip Lawrence and his son James, along with Councillor Adam Bureau starting down Second Street from Victoria Hall at 10 a.m. to the Farmer’s Market just south of Albert Street.
Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland said when he first arrived in Cobourg his family had a booth at the Farmer’s Market selling nut milk. Since then he had the canteen at the trailer park and a business downtown before becoming Mayor.
“This Farmer’s Market is one huge part of what makes this community so amazing and I look forward to it every single week.”
MP Philip Lawrence is also a frequent vendor to the market selling wine.
‘It’s a fantastic institution and event every Saturday morning to come out and get your local produce, produced right here, from the best farmer’s in all of Canada, right here in Northumberland.”
President of the Farmer’s Market, Lauren Pinto said there will be lots of events for families during the summer.
Councillor Adam Bureau said one of the best things he enjoys about the market is seeing the people.
“Every Saturday morning, tons of people come out, we meet our neighbours – everyone is so friendly. It’s absolutely outstanding to see this every Saturday morning.”
Cobourg Farmer’s Market started in 1839 and is one of the oldest continuous markets in Ontario.
There were 29 vendors on opening day with some of the farmer’s working on getting their products making the market busier as weeks go by.
There are a variety of produce available each week from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., cheese, beer, crafts, apples, apple cider, pizza, salsa, butter tarts, jewellery and much more.
