Cobourg Police – Operation Impact Results

In Police Blotter

In October, as part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP), the Cobourg Police Service (CPS) joined police services across Canada in participating in Operation Impact. Operation Impact is a road safety initiative focused on safe driving practices, including impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and aggressive driving, and failure to use seat belts.

In addition to the enhanced traffic enforcement, CPS conducted two Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs in the Town of Cobourg.

October STEP resulted in 81 Provincial Offence charges, including 27 speeding tickets, driving with a handheld device (8), careless driving (4), failing to stop for a red light (2), disobeying stop signs (3) and disobeying a sign at an intersection (2), not wearing a seatbelt (2), and other charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

Traffic stops conducted in relation to Operation Impact also resulted in significant Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges including failing to comply with probation (6), possession of a controlled substance for purposes of trafficking (6), possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose (1), possession of a prohibited device (4), and possession of a weapon contrary to prohibition (5).

Cobourg Police Service reminds drivers and passengers that safety does not happen by accident. We must all consciously consider safety anytime we get behind the wheel. Never drive impaired, pay attention to the road, and refrain from aggressive driving or distracted driving behaviour. Buckle seat belts and ensure children are correctly buckled in their car seat or booster seat according to their age and size.
