Durham Police – SIU Called in Following Pursuit of a Stolen Police Vehicle in Whitby

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate following a pursuit in Whitby that led to a serious collision involving a stolen police cruiser on Sunday evening.

On Sunday, March 7, 2021, at approximately 7:11 p.m., DRPS responded to a suspicious person call in the area of Victoria Street in Whitby. While investigating the incident, a police cruiser was stolen. The stolen cruiser struck a civilian vehicle near Garden Street and Dundas Street in Whitby. The two occupants of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Jesse JOHNSON, a 30-year-old male of Sarnia faces numerous charges including: Break and Enter with Intent; Theft over $5,000; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000; Fail to Stop for Police; Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm x2; Possession of Firearm Obtained by Crime and Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order. He was held for a bail hearing.

As is the protocol, the SIU was called and they have invoked their mandate. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
