Town of Cobourg Water Conservation Garden Gets a Facelift

In Community

The Town of Cobourg Water Conservation Garden, located at the intersection of Ewart Street and Division Street, has undergone a renovation.

Similar to a homeowner’s perennial garden, plants can become overgrown and unmanageable; therefore, a redesign is sometimes required.

In partnership with Lakefront Utility Services Inc. and generous donations from Ontario Power Generation and Enbridge Inc., the gardens have been transformed into a semi-formal garden with elements of zeroscape and xeriscape, designed and installed by Green Side Up Environmental Services and Landscaping.

Zeroscape uses stone and rock and allows for minimal maintenance while still allowing for water conservation/xeriscape principles. Now, visitors of the gardens can see distinctive groups of native plants that are used to add colour, texture, and general interest throughout the seasons.

“Lakefront Utilities Services Inc. are proud to continue a long-standing partnership with the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority.”, said Larry Spyrka, Manager of Water Capital Projects. “Even though the Town of Cobourg’s drinking water comes from a safe and secure source of Lake Ontario, it is still important to conserve water and do our part protect the environment.”

Plan a trip to the Town of Cobourg Water Conservation Garden this fall. You can learn about ways to conserve water, how the Town of Cobourg receives its drinking water, and ways to incorporate native plants and water conservation techniques into your own backyard.
