On Sunday April 5, 2020 just after 2:30 pm, an officer from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), stopped a red 2011 Chevy four door sedan in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 after it was measured travelling 189 km/h.

During the investigation approximately 482 grams of cannabis marihuana was seized.

A 19-year-old novice driver and resident of Port Hope, Ontario was charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Cannabis Control Act (CCA) with:

· Race a motor vehicle – excessive speed.
· Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available

The driver received a seven day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. A first court appearance date has been scheduled for June 3, 2020 in Cobourg.

Highway safety is a shared responsibility and the OPP would like to remind motorists to drive within posted speed limits, exercise patience and not allow themselves to be distracted while driving.
