Writers and Friends Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in Cobourg this September with the return of three of Canada’s most acclaimed authors.
Horizons of Friendship, a non-profit international development organization with charitable status, will host the 25th annual Writers and Friends Festival on Sunday, September 15 at Victoria Hall to support its ongoing work of eliminating the root causes of poverty and injustice in Central America and Mexico.
The Writers and Friends Festival is a panel discussion featuring Canadian authors Lisa Moore (winner of Canada Reads in 2015, and nominated for the Giller Prize in 2002, 2005 and 2018), Elizabeth Hay (winner of the Giller prize in 2007, and winner of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction in 2018) and Charlotte Gray (winner of the UBC Medal for Canadian Biography in 2002, winner of the Pierre Berton Prize for distinguished achievement in popularizing and promoting Canadian history in 2003, and made a member of the Order of Canada in 2007). The discussion is moderated by Paul Kennedy, host of CBC Radio’s Ideas.
Twenty-five years ago, the Writers and Friends Festival made its stunning debut with authors Farley and Claire Mowat, and the event was held in the Mowats’ living room. Since its inception, the festival has hosted some of Canada’s most beloved authors, including Jane Urquart, Madeleine Thien, Michael Crummey, Miriam Towes, M.G. Vassanji, Linden MacIntyre and more. Returning authors Lisa Moore, Elizabeth Hay and Charlotte Gray are among some of the favourite and most engaging guests of the past quarter-century. The theme of this year’s festival is maturing – from both the perspective of the authors and the festival itself.
The event takes place at Victoria Hall on Sunday, September 15 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available at Horizons of Friendship in Cobourg (50 Covert St.) Furby House Books in Port Hope (65 Walton St.), and through Horizons of Friendship in Cobourg. Tickets are $40 and a charitable tax receipt is provided. Doors open for the event at 1:30 p.m.
