Breaking News – SIU Investigating After Durham Police Officer Shot in Oshawa

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a police-involved shooting today in Oshawa.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 11 a.m. on January 18, 2026, Durham Regional Police Service attended a residence on Cedar Street in Oshawa for a mental health call.
  • Soon after arriving, officers encountered a 27-year-old man who was armed with a knife.
  • There was an interaction, and one officer discharged their firearm multiple times. The man was struck as was a police officer.
  • Both individuals were transported to hospital for treatment. They are both in stable condition.
At this time, it does not appear that the man had a firearm.
Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
