The Colborne Art Gallery’s 12th Annual Juried Art Show

It’s time again for the annual juried show at the Colborne Art Gallery. The show runs from September 11 to November 2. It features artists from inside and around Northumberland County as well as the GTA.

An award’s reception will be held at the gallery on September 13 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Jurist Wendy Rayson-Kerr, the curator of the Parrott Gallery in Belleville, selected 37 artworks from 99 entries. Wendy will discuss with attendees at the reception her method for choosing the body of work for the exhibition.

Three awards will be presented at the reception: the Juror’s Choice Award, $500, an Honourable Mention, $300 and the Mayor’s Award, $200. Last year’s Juror’s Choice Award went to “Jumping Mouse”, a linocut print done by Susan Munderich.

Susan is a linocut print-maker who uses her work to “raise awareness of the awe-inspiring nature events occurring perpetually in urban environments”. She believes that “art is a valuable educational tool that can be leveraged to inspire and mobilize others in preserving and protecting biodiversity.”

An elementary school teacher in Pickering, Ontario, Susan states, “Throughout my teaching career, I have been a staunch advocate for both visual arts and nature programming and have created and facilitated a vast range of arts and nature-based professional development opportunities for teachers.”

Susan also writes nature books and illustrates them with her linocut prints which show the characteristics and behaviour of local creatures. She hikes Pickering’s trails with her camera and nature journal to reflect on and record the beauty of the area’s wild spaces. Her linocut prints are designed from these studies.

This past spring, Susan, a born educator, gave a sold-out workshop at the Colborne Art Gallery in linocut print-making.

The Colborne Art Gallery is located on the Apple Route at 51 King Street East, Colborne. Gallery hours are 12 – 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, or by appointment.

All artworks are for sale and admission is free.
