Northumberland OPP – Incidents Include Sexual Assault, Road Rage, MVC, Romance Scam

Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid a number of charges in unrelated incidents recently.

Person Charged After Romance Scam

In April 2025, police received a report regarding an online fraud where a Township of Cramahe resident was subject to a romance scam between November 2024 and March 2025. A quantity of cash had been provided to an individual and OPP began an investigation into the matter.

Through lines of enquiry and with the assistance of Orillia OPP, officers arrested a person sought in connection to the incident on June 9, 2025.

As a result, Edith BAGLEY, 73, from Orillia, has been charged with:

– Fraud over $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear in July, before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.

 

Theft of Cell Phone

In April 2025, officers received a complaint regarding the theft of a cell phone from a commercial premises on Main Street in the Municipality of Brighton. Police viewed footage of the incident and began an investigation where an individual was identified and a warrant sought for their arrest.

With the assistance of Quinte West OPP, the individual was taken into custody on June 12, 2025.

Laim WALLACE, 18, from Prince Edward County, has been charged with:

– Theft under $5,000.

The accused is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in July.

 

Sexual Assault

In May 2025, the Northumberland OPP Crime Unit began an investigation following a report of a sexual assault believed to have occurred in late 2023. The victim was known to the accused at this time.

As a result of the investigation, an individual was arrested on June 9, 2025. A 51-year-old male, from the Municipality of Brighton, has been charged with:

– Sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age.

The accused shall not be named to protect the identity of the victim. The person is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date.

There is no statute of limitations on sexual offences and a report can be made to police at any time, regardless of how much time has passed. Road Rage

On June 7, 2025, police received a report where a caller advised that they were threatened the previous day after they stopped their vehicle on County Road 30 in the Municipality of Brighton. The accused exited the vehicle their vehicle and confronted the complainant. Details were provided to officers for their investigation.

On June 9, 2025, Shane TIGHE, 50, from the Municipality of Brighton, was arrested and charged with:

– Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm.

The individual is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in July.

 

Domestic Violence

On June 7, 2025, shortly after 1:00 p.m., OPP responded to a report of intimate partner violence at an address in the Municipality of Port Hope. The subject of the complaint was then reported to be driving an agricultural vehicle while impaired.

Officers proceeded to the location and observed the person operating a vehicle. Police attempted to stop the vehicle however the accused fled from police and almost collided with a stationary cruiser. The individual later stopped at a nearby gas station where they were taken into custody.

A 47-year-old male, from the Municipality of Port Hope, has been charged with:

– Assault – spousal

– Dangerous operation

– Flight from peace officer

– Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

– Failure or refusal to comply with demand

– Mischief – interfere with any person in the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property

– Take motor vehicle without consent

– Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court.

The accused shall not be named to protect the identity of the complainant. The individual was held for a Bail Hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.

 

Person Charged After MVC

On June 13, 2025, shortly before 2:00 a.m., officers responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on Morrish Church Road in the Municipality of Port Hope. Police arrived and observed a number of tire marks on the road leading to the passenger vehicle in the ditch.

Following speaking to the uninjured driver, OPP entered into an impaired operation investigation. As a result, the individual was taken into custody and transported to a local detachment for further tests.

Robyn GRAY, 27, from Lyndhurst, has been charged with:

– Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

– Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

– Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt.

In addition to a future court date, a furt her 90-day Administrative Driver Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 14-day vehicle impound was initiated as per statute.

If you know or suspect that a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs, call 9-1-1. In doing so, you may save a life. Whether you are impaired by alcohol or drugs, impaired is impaired and driving under the influence of either is a criminal offence. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive.

Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.
