Northumberland OPP – Suspect Charged Careless Use of Fire Arm, Assault, Mischief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged an individual in connection with an investigation involving a firearm.

On February 10, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the OPP responded to a call for service at a residence in Northumberland County. It was reported that an individual at the residence had a firearm. As a result of the incident, one individual sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital. The individual is in stable condition.

On February 12, 2024, a 28-year-old person from Northumberland County has been charged under the Criminal Code (CC) with the following offences:

  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition – two counts, section 86(1)
  • Unauthorised possession of a firearm, section 91(1)
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, section 88
  • Assault – spousal, section 266
  • Mischief – domestic, section 430(4)

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

The name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

The Northumberland OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services.

The province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. Any other inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at 416-622-2342 or siu.media@ontario.ca.
