Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in connection with a number of unrelated incidents.
Fraud
On July 27, 2026, police received a report that a vehicle had been entered on County Road 30 in the Municipality of Trent Hills two days earlier. The complainant reported that a debit card had been stolen and subsequently used to make a number of fraudulent purchases at businesses in Havelock.
As a result of the investigation, officers identified and arrested one individual on August 20, 2026.
Steven LAFONTE (66) of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township, has been charged with:
– Possession of credit card data – three counts
– Fraud under $5,000 – three counts
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in November 2026.
Stolen Vehicle
On August 23, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols on Highway 401 westbound in the Township of Hamilton when the Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system alerted them to a stolen vehicle.
Police conducted a traffic stop and arrested one individual. The vehicle had recently been reported stolen in Quebec.
Thi KIEN (44) of North York has been charged with:
– Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
– Theft of motor vehicle
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in September 2026.
Sexual Assault
On June 28, 2026, police received a report regarding historical sexual assaults which occurred between the summer months of 2024 and March 2026 at an address in the Township of Hamilton.
The accused and victim were known to each other during the period in which the incidents are reported to have occurred.
The Northumberland OPP Crime Unit began an investigation into the incidents which resulted in one person being taken into custody on August 22, 2026.
A 20-year-old female from Oshawa, has been charged with:
– Sexual assault
– Sexual interference
The accused is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in September. They shall not be named to protect the identity of the victim.
