The City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is continuing a targeted aggressive driving enforcement initiative focused on Highway 7 and surrounding roadways following a concerning increase in fatal collisions within the detachment area in 2026.
Analysis conducted by the OPP identified that by June 8, 202 6, the detachment area had already recorded 10 fatal motor vehicle collisions, exceeding the total number of fatal collisions recorded during the entirety of 2023, 2024, and 2025. Highway 7 was identified as a significant roadway of concern, accounting for 35 per cent of fatal roadway collisions between January 1, 2023, and June 8, 2026.
The analysis also found that many fatal collisions occurred during daylight hours, in clear weather, and on dry roadways, emphasizing the role that driver behaviour can play in serious and fatal collisions.
In response to these findings, the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP launched a targeted aggressive driving enforcement initiative on June 30, 2026.
During the first month of the initiative, officers laid:
83 Highway Traffic Act charges
1 Criminal Code driving charge
53 speeding and stunt driving related charges
These enforcement results highlight the continued presenc e of dangerous driving behaviours on local roadways and reinforce the need for ongoing traffic safety initiatives.

The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP reminds all motorists that aggressive driving behaviours such as speeding, unsafe passing, following too closely, and stunt driving place everyone on the roadway at risk.
Motorists are encouraged to:
Obey posted speed limits.
Leave sufficient following dis tance.
Avoid aggressive or unsafe passing manoeuvres.
Eliminate distractions while driving.
Plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
Make safe driving decisions every time they get behind the wheel.
Targeted enforcement will continue throughout the detachment area as officers work to improve road safety and reduce preventable deaths and injuries.
