Northumberland OPP – Loaded Rifle Seized After Arrest for Impaired Operation

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a motorist with impaired operation and seized a loaded firearm from the vehicle.

On March 25, 2026, at approximately 9:45 p.m., police received a report of a suspicious vehicle near a residence on 7th Line Road in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand.

Officers attended and spoke with the driver, who was found to be wanted on a warrant. An impaired operation investigation was initiated, and the individual was taken into custody.

A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a loaded rifle.

As a result, a 19-year-old male from the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand has been charged with:

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm

Careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition

Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm

Fail to comply with sentence

The accused will not be named, as one of the offences relates to a time when the individual was a youth, and their identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). They were held for bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
