Northumberland OPP – ALPR Leads to Recovery of Stolen Vehicle

In Police Blotter

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has recovered a stolen vehicle in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand.

On October 16, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., an officer patrolling County Road 45 in the Municipality of Trent Hills, received an alert from the in-car Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system regarding a vehicle travelling southbound and believed to be stolen.

The driver left the roadway, driving into a field behind a residence, and then fled on foot. The vehicle, a pickup truck, was confirmed stolen from Belleville. As a result, there was an increased police presence in the area.  Emergency Response Team (ERT) members and the Canine Unit (K9) were deployed to assist with the search.

No individuals were located, and the investigation remains ongoing.

ALPR has proven to be an effective way to leverage technology and increase the efficiency of discovering and conducting investigations related to both traffic and criminal offences. It does so by detecting licence plates that are linked to occurrences such as wanted or missing persons, stolen vehicles, stolen and unattached plates, suspended/prohibited drivers, vehicles associated with AMBER Alerts and other serious occurrences.
