Mooibroek, Inglis Await Finals Opponents at Ontario Curling Championships

In Sports

Skips Sam Mooibroek and Danielle Inglis and their rinks have advanced to the finals of the men’s and women’s Ontario Curling championships Sunday at the Cobourg Community Centre.

They won’t know their opponents until the end of Saturday’s draws.

Friday night, Mooibroek defeated defending champ Scott Howard 9-3 in the men’s Page playoff 1 versus 2 game while Inglis – the defending women’s champ – was victorious 9-5 over Hailey Armstrong in the women’s Page playoff between the top teams.

Mooibroek remains undefeated after previously winning the men’s ‘A’ bracket. Inglis lost her opening game of the women’s tournament but has since won five straight to emerge from the ‘B’ bracket and then hand Armstrong her first defeat in the Page playoffs.

Howard and Armstrong remain in contention, but will have to win semifinal match-ups to reach the finals.

Play continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the ‘C’ bracket, which is for teams that have lost twice in the triple-knockout format and face elimination. On the men’s side, Jonathon Beuk will face Brent Ross and Jayden King will take on Mark Kean. The women’s match-ups feature Carly Howard against Julia Markle and Isabelle Ladouceur facing Chelsea Brandwood.

The winners will move on to the men’s and women’s Page playoff 3 versus 4 games at 2 p.m.

Saturday’s 7 p.m. draw will feature the men’s and women’s semifinals as Howard and Armstrong await the winners of the afternoon Page games.

On Sunday, the women’s final is scheduled for 10 a.m. while the men’s is set for 2:30 p.m.

The winners will qualify for the women’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts and men’s Montana’s Brier national championships.
