Cobourg Police – Incidents Include Shoplifting, Assault, Impaired

Cobourg Man Charged with Shoplifting (No Name Released)
A 44-year-old Cobourg man is facing charges after police received a report of shoplifting at a local business.

On Friday, January 10, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., police were called to a business on King Street West for a theft. It was reported that a man entered the store, took merchandise and departed, making no attempt to pay. Police located the suspect a short distance away and placed him under arrest. The property was located and returned to business. The 44-year-old Cobourg man was charged with Theft Under $5,000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 and Failing to Comply with Probation.

The accused was released with a future court date.

 

Cobourg Man Charged with Spousal Assault 

Intimate-partner violence arrest made after police responded to a call Saturday morning.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m., police were called to the area of Victoria Park after a man was observed assaulting a female. Police arrived in the area and located the suspect. No physical injuries were sustained. Following an investigation, the 46-year-old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with Assault – Spousal.

The accused was released with a future court date.

 

Port Hope Woman Charged with Impaired, Careless Driving (No Name Released)
A 33-year-old Port Hope woman is facing impaired charges after police responded to a motor vehicle collision Saturday night.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, at approximately 10:10 p.m., police were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle collision in the area of Burnham Street and White Street in the Town of Cobourg. The caller reported being rear ended by another driver who they believed may be impaired.

Police arrived on scene and, through investigation, determined her ability to operate a motor vehicle was
impaired by drug. As a result, the driver, a 33-year-old Port Hope woman, was arrested.

The driver further refused to comply with a lawful demand made by the arresting officer. The driver was
charged with Operation while impaired (drug), Refusal to Comply with Demand, Careless Driving, Possessing more than one licence, and Drive – Handheld Communication Device.

The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 7 Days. The accused was later released on an Undertaking with a future court date.

 

Cobourg Man Charged with Spousal Assault

A 37-year-old Cobourg man has been arrested after an incident Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, at approximately 5:15 p.m., police were called to the area of Victoria Park after a male was observed assaulting a female. The victim sustained minor injuries. The suspect was not located at this time.

On Sunday, January 12, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., police were conducting a foot patrol in the downtown area when they located the male party wanted for the assault. As a result, the 37-year-old Cobourg man was arrested without incident and charged with Assault – Spousal.

The accused was released with a future court date.

 

Cobourg Man Charged with Assault with a Weapon (Name Released)

A 45-year-old Cobourg man was arrested following a weapons call Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, January 12, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., police responded to a weapons call in the area of King Street West and Forth Street in Cobourg. Two youths reported being approached by a man with a knife. Police arrived on scene and arrested the suspect. No injuries were sustained during the interaction, and no physical contact was made.

Following an investigation, Luke Bateman (45) of Cobourg was charged with Assault with a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Uttering Threats.

The man met the criteria for release and was released on an Undertaking with a future court date.
