Northumberland OPP – Driver Involved in Collision Charged with Refusal (Name Released)

In Police Blotter

Officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver for failure or refusal to comply with a demand.

On August 23, 2024, at approximately 10:05 p.m., police responded to a report from a member of the public regarding a driver that had lost control and collided with a ditch in the vicinity of County Road 2 and Hilltop Road in the Township of Alnwick-Haldimand.

Officers arrived at the location and observed a passenger vehicle in the ditch with minimal damage. Following speaking to the uninjured driver, police entered into an impaired operation investigation. The individual was arrested and transported to a local detachment where the accused refused to comply with a demand for breath.

As a result, Matthew JANES, 30-years-old, from the Township of Alnwick-Haldimand, has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Use plate not authorised for vehicle
  • Drive motor vehicle no licence.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the accused is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date.

Northumberland OPP would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that failure or refusal to comply with a demand in an impaired operation, investigation is a criminal offence. Furthermore, the consequences an individual will face are the same as being charged with impaired operation.

If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 9-1-1 to report it.
