Total calls for service – Belleville Police responded to 98 calls for service over a 24-hour period stretching from 5:00 am on August 8, 2024 to 5:00 a.m. August 9, 2024.
Home burns, arson suspect arrested
A structure fire at a house on Lingham Street led to the arrest of a 33-year-old Belleville man early Friday on arson charges, Friday.
Police were called to the east end street around 2 a.m. to assist Belleville firefighters with traffic control after neighbours spotted the blaze.
Victim Services and Red Cross also responded to assist with accommodations and support for five people who were displaced as a result of the fire.
Shortly after arriving, officers placed the male under arrest for arson. He was held for a bail hearing.
An investigation into the incident is continuing involving members of the Criminal Investigations Division, the Belleville Fire Prevention Division of the Belleville Fire Department and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
Out of control teenager arrested
A 17-year-old Belleville male was arrested on multiple charges late Thursday following a family dispute that spiraled out of control.
Officers were called to a housing complex on North Park Street for a report of a disturbance shortly before 11 p.m. While wandering inside and out of his home, the teenager was observed screaming and smashing items.
At one point during the altercation the male armed himself with several large kitchen knives and threatened multiple people. Upon the arrival of officers he was quickly placed under arrest.
The male was brought to the police station where he was held for a bail hearing on multiple charges including threats, weapons dangerous and mischief.
Stirling Woman Charged with Impaired
Shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, a motorist called police to report a potentially impaired driver on North Front Street. According to the caller, the driver failed to stop at several red lights and was observed striking the curb of the roadway as it headed south.
As the vehicle travelled through a red light at the intersection of College Street, it came within a few feet of striking a pedestrian, according to the caller.
Officers caught up to the suspect vehicle in the area of Church Street and arrested the motorist. Charged with impaired driving and Having Over 80 mgs is 45-year-old Lori Elizabeth Helyer of Stirling.
In addition to the drunk driving charges, the vehicle Helyer was operating was impounded for a week and her licence was suspended for 90 days.
She was released with a court date on September 19, 2024.
