Belleville Police – Businessman Charged with Sexually Assaulting Female Employee

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Belleville Police Service believe there may be more victims of a businessman who was charged with sexually assaulting a female employee.

Earlier this week a teenager attended the front counter of the police station looking to speak with an officer regarding a sexual assault. The 19-year-old woman alleged she was sexually assaulted while completing training by the owner of a Belleville-area business.

An investigation was launched and on Thursday July 25, 2024, police arrested 49-year-old Kuganeswaran SOMASUNTHARAM and charged him with one count of sex assault.

SOMASUNTHARAM was held for bail and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice today where he was remanded into custody until his next hearing date on July 29, 2024.

While SOMASUNTHARAM lives part-time in Belleville, he also has significant connections to the Trenton area and a home in Whitby.

As the investigation has unfolded, detectives working on the case now believe there may be more victims of SOMASUNTHARAM under similar circumstances.

Charged with sex assault
A 49-year-old city businessman was charged with sex assault following an investigation which started when a female walked into the front lobby of the police service to report an incident this week.

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old woman attended the Belleville Police Service, located at 459 Sidney Street, and advised she had recently started a new job at a local business.

During her first day working she advised reportedly sexually assaulted by the owner of the business.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Belleville Police Service began an investigation into the allegation, which culminated in the arrest of the suspect Thursday afternoon.

The man, who was charged with sexual assault, was held for a bail hearing Friday.
