Cobourg Police will not be changing their media policy when it comes to the releasing of names.

When the policy first was announced in February 2022, Chief Paul VandeGraaf stated names of accused would only be released by Cobourg Police, “when it is in the interest of public safety, for investigative purposes or public interest (as determined by the Chief of Police or designate).”

VandeGraaf also said he would be looking at the policy yearly.

Reaching out to VandeGraaf, communications spokesperson Lisa Munday quoted VandeGraaf stating, “we continually review and reflect on operational procedures and work to implement best practices. The naming procedure will not be changing. We continue to focus on ensuring consistency in adherence to the procedure.”

Cobourg Police Service Board members stated it is the Chief’s decision as it is a operational matter.

The policy has been controversial since it was released.

Ontario Provincial Police release all names of a suspect is charged with a criminal offence unless it is domestic releated, involves a youth or would identify a victim.
