Cobourg Police – Bike Registry

In Police Blotter

Cobourg Police Service (CPS) encourages residents to register their bikes following increased incidents of bike theft.

With summer on the horizon, more people are choosing to use their bikes to commute around town or to get some exercise or family time in, and those bicycles might be at risk of being stolen. For that reason, CPS is asking cyclists to register their bikes online following increased incidents of theft in the Town of Cobourg.

This free registry was introduced three years ago. Bike theft is a crime of opportunity, as people are more likely to steal an unlocked and unattended bike. Registering your bike increases the chances of having your bicycle returned to you if it is lost or stolen.

What to do if your bike is lost or stolen:

• Record the date and time of the theft.

• Ensure the property owner or manager did not remove the bicycle if it was parked on private property.

• Report a missing bicycle to the police by phone or online.

• Inform your insurance company (if applicable).

• Check online buy and sell websites for recent postings. If you believe you have located your bicycle on an external website, alert the police rather than contacting the seller directly.

• If your bicycle is unique to a specific type of cycling, you can list it on community websites and forums.

Bike Registry Details:
Bike owners will need to provide information about the bike and ownership, including:

• Brand

• Make and model

• Serial number

• Owner name and contact information

• Bike owners can include photos and add more than one bicycle at the same time.

To register your bike, please visit our website at cobourgpoliceservice.com/online-reporting.
