In Police Blotter

The Durham Regional Police Services Board has been advised that Deputy Chief Bertrim has been served a Notice of Hearing by the Ontario Civilian Police Commission, following its investigation under section 25 of the Police Services Act, which began in 2019. The Notice of Hearing sets out one count of deceit, contrary to the Code of Conduct.

The Board is committed to upholding public trust and accountability for policing in Durham Region.

It is essential that the community have confidence that police officers are held to the highest standards of ethical conduct. It is also important that the Board support and defend the principles
of fairness and integrity for all of its members, including its most senior leaders. On balance and consideration of these factors, and in light of Deputy Chief Bertrim’s exemplary leadership over the
last four years, the Board supports his continued functioning in his current role.

The hearing process is governed by the Police Services Act, and the Board has no involvement in testing the allegations against Deputy Chief Bertrim. The matter remains exclusively within the
jurisdiction of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission. The Board is legally obligated not to disclose any further details until the commencement of the hearing, at which time Deputy Chief
Bertrim will have the opportunity to challenge the evidence. At this time, a date for the hearing has not been set by the Commission.

The Board endeavors to protect and advance the public interest in all its decisions. We are committed to enhancing confidence in the DRPS and in the women and men who dedicate their
professional careers to keeping us safe.
