OPP Street Crime Unit Lays Multiple Charges

The Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid over 80 charges related to numerous break-ins across East Region, which began in October 2021.

CSCU arrested two individuals February 23, 2022 following a multi-jurisdictional investigation. During the course of the investigation CSCU, was assisted by the OPP Canine Unit, East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement ( ROPE), many frontline officers and OPP analytics team across many OPP patrolled areas. The OPP recovered a multitude of stolen property, including firearms.

The Community Street Crime Unit has ch arged Wayne SWEET, age 50 of no fixed address and Matthew FRENCH, age 30, of Belleville, Ontario with over 80 Criminal Code charges including Break and enter, Theft under $5000, Possession of Property obtained by crime – under $5000, Mischief, Fail to comply, Theft over $5000, Theft of a motor vehicle, Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, Possession of break in instruments, possession of controlled substance, Unauthorized possession of a firearm as well as over 35 Highway Traffic Offences.

The accused both remain in custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston on February 28, 2022.
