Cobourg Opens Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy 2022-2026 Finalized

In City Hall

The strategy provides a framework that addresses the needs of Cobourg’s diverse community.

The Town of Cobourg’s Legislative Services Department is pleased to announce the now completed Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy 2022-2026 that will systematically identify and address both internal and external achievable objectives and goals through a series of measurable action items tied to the Global Equity, Diversity and Inclusion benchmarks, which have been customized to meet the needs of the Town of Cobourg.

The Town of Cobourg is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion as a part of its core values and understands that the effective creation and dissemination of goods, information, and
services must take place in a government community which recognizes the dignity and value of each and every one of its employees and community at large.

On January 4, 2021, Mayor John Henderson signed a declaration to have the Town of Cobourg join the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities (CIM) to continue to support diversity and inclusion
and to work against racism and discrimination locally. As part of the Council Resolution for the EDI Strategy, and the signing to become a member of the CIM, the Town of Cobourg created an
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy that included input from community stakeholders, rights holders, Town staff, Council, and the EDI Advisory Committee of Council.

“I’m very pleased that Council unanimously agreed to develop an equity, diversity and inclusion strategy that will help facilitate the removal of systemic barriers in Town programs and services,”
said Mayor John Henderson for the Town of Cobourg. “The finalization of this important initiative required a holistic approach across the entire organization.”

The Town of Cobourg’s EDI Strategy 2022-2026 outlines how the Town will continue to identify, address, remove, and prevent barriers for Town staff and the community at large. In conjunction
with Council’s Strategic Plan and Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, the EDI strategy outlines opportunities to meet the needs of an evolving and diversified workforce and community.

The EDI Strategy 2022-2026 envisions “A Cobourg that meets the needs of everyone living, working, playing, and visiting” and identifies four goals that contribute towards this vision,
including:
• Goal #1: Identify and address systemic barriers within the corporation.
• Goal #2: Create programs to meet the needs of everyone.
• Goal #3: Engage our diverse communities in a meaningful way.
• Goal #4: Attract and leverage a diverse workforce.

“We stand to only benefit from having a diverse workplace and a welcoming community and the EDI Strategy provides us with the building blocks for creating such inclusion,” said Tracey
Vaughan, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Cobourg.
